Switching blogs…

So I’ve been thinking about this for quite some time and I’ve finally bitten the bullet and created a new blog site. This blog (stockyardmama.wordpress.com) was created with the purpose of keeping our families up to date on our life from afar and now that most of our family/friends are on social media that’s not fully necessary. On the new blog I will be more focused on writing, reviewing books, posting devotionals, encouraging other believers, etc.

21-DSD – Day 21

Here it is…the FINAL day of our detox and I can honestly say I DID IT!!! I completed the detox without dying, starving, killing someone else, causing major issues in our marriage (or family). I am so excited to say that I COMPLETED the 21-Day Sugar Detox!!

Things I loved about it:

  • I kicked my sugar cravings (especially late in the evening).
  • I kicked my Dr. Pepper habit. I can honestly say that besides my pregnancies this is the LONGEST I have ever gone without Dr. Pepper since I was a teenager.
  • I kicked my carb cravings. I never thought I could be a Paleo or Gluten-Free person but over the last 21 days I have proven to myself that IT IS replaceable.
  • I lost weight. As of this morning I was down 10.4 LBS. This was a goal of mine but was not the main goal in doing this Detox.
  • I’ve had more energy fluidly throughout the day. I ALWAYS had the mid-morning lull that needed a pick-me-up bar or coffee and the mid-afternoon crash that required a Dr.Pepper or Mt. Dew. I missed these snacks and drinks for about the first 4 days and then all of the sudden, I didn’t even think about it. It has been a great help with my kids too in the afternoons, because I’m not all of the sudden exhausted.
  • My hubby did it with me!! He’s been committed and stayed with me throughout the entire 21 days (with very few cheats). He’s also lost weight and I am so proud of him.
  • I fell asleep quicker. I’ve always had a problem falling asleep and since day 6 of the detox I’ve noticeably been able to fall asleep much quicker than ever before, even in the middle of the night when one of the kids would wake me I was always able to fall back to sleep easily.
  • I ate foods I didn’t know I liked and now I like them…I can not say that I love them but I will at least eat them now.

Things I didn’t like about it:

  • It was hard. I mean come on, if I’m honest here I had to totally change the way we ate at home, veggies were always an after-thought when I prepared our meals and now they are just as important as the main dish to me as I think and prepare.
  • It was 21 DAYS…while I understand the methods behind this madness it was hard to do this for a full 21 consecutive days.
  • I had bacon and eggs everyday for breakfast (except the first two days when I made some buffalo chicken muffins from the book). I used to LOVE bacon and now I just like it :-). I just wished that there were more options for breakfast (quick breakfasts) that didn’t include or be made from eggs and bacon.

21DSD – Days 18-20

So I’ve officially been HORRIBLE at blogging throughout this experience.
We’ve kept so busy due to summer that I’m wiped at the end of the day and have been going to sleep so much faster that my late night blogging has been nil. However, I will recap the last few days…they were HARD.

In the last 5 days of this commitment I’ve had the most desire to to just stop on that day and say I did it. I mean I made it 19 days without sugar, carbs, dairy, or as my loving husband says, “We gave up all food with taste.”, surely that’s enough, right? Well, thankfully in her book The 21-Day Sugar Detox she warns you of these thoughts and ways to subdue them.

I will admit (to all who read this) that I did officially cheat on day 17 and eat a few grapes but come on…grapes. It’s not like I cheated with Dr. Pepper or a snickers bar (and for those that know me know that those WOULD have been my cheats before this detox).

Over the last 5 days we did however get a little less adventurous with our meals and began eating some of the things we had been eating over the previous weeks. In that aspect I wish I would have planned better, maybe held out at least 1 recipe I wanted to try for the end stretch but we made it.

Now on to Day 21!!!

21DSD Days 14-17

Okay…so I said I would blog about this experience but for the same reason I haven’t blogged in the last year, I just flat out am too busy! The last 4 days have been good. We’ve made more yummy recipes and tried new foods but today was difficult because we had TWO birthday parties to attend and both served up some VERY yummy foods. The first party we went to had a all-you-can-eat DONUT bar…no joke I’ve never seen so many donuts (except in the donut shop). Man was that hard to fix the kids their plates and NOT lick my fingers. Then of course, they had yummy cupcakes on top of that and also a piñata but that was an easy no go for me…surprisingly enough I have no desire for candy.

Then on to the next party. They had TONS of snacks, all pirate themed. Pirate bananas, pirate marshmallows, gummy bears, jello cups with little pirate ships, pudding cups, carrot sticks, cheese, etc. Then they had the kids make their own pizzas and they made pizza’s for the adults. It was all so cute but so tempting.

I am ready to be done but honestly have enjoyed the last 18 days and could do it for a week more, oh wait..I still have a few days 🙂

While I’m looking forward to being done I know it’s been good for me.

Days 10 – 13

Checking in…it’s still going good but man am I ready to just eat normal “easy” food again. I now know how to plan and prep for meals better which has always been an issue in my cooking skill bucket but this 1-2 hour daily prep is waining on me. I have however been able to work out everyday for the last three days and am feeling much better with my energy levels.

If you haven’t checked out any of Diane Sanfilippo’s information on the 21 Day Sugar Detox or Balanced Bites, now is the time. She’s recently put out a few amazing videos about sugar and your body that have taught me a lot.

21DSD – Days 8 & 9

Day 8 – Today was the first day I worked out since I began the 21 Day Sugar Detox. I think it went well. I was able to complete the T25 with minimal modifications. I felt great!

Today however, I did not eat well. I didn’t cheat (that I knew of at the time) or anything but I just didn’t eat enough to sustain my body with the calories that I had burned. I ate a normal breakfast (before working out) of Eggs and Bacon but for lunch we ate an early lunch so that we could get Addyson to MusiCamp on time and I wasn’t that hungry so I just ate a slice of turkey and a banana. We dropped Addyson off and then headed to Costco then back home for a quick rest time for Owen and I then back to pick her up just in time for a friends birthday party at The Flight Deck. The kids were so excited for the party! I didn’t grab a snack (which I should’ve since I did for the kids) so I went to the party unprepared. I wasn’t tempted to eat the cake or bubble gum or rock candy or cup cakes but for some reason I REALLY wanted some yogurt. I didn’t give in and stayed strong. We headed home after 5 and I started dinner for the kids. I had already told Justin I wouldn’t have time to prepare a “real” meal for us so we’d have to make do with other things for dinner. I found a can of Lentil and Vegetable Soup in the pantry and thought that sounded great. It wasn’t and then upon further research in the 21 Day Sugar Detox book, lentils are on the “do not eat” list anyway. So technically I “cheated” but I didn’t know it and it wasn’t good anyway :-).

Day 9 – So far so good…didn’t work out this morning because I was still pretty drained from yesterday. I don’t think I ate enough. I’ve never woken up so hungry. Don’t know if this is normal but I’m going to try and eat more balanced meals today. I feel good, just feel hungry but surprisingly not for any of my go-to foods for curbing immediate hunger.

Today, I’m going to be thankful for the 8 successful days I have completed and ask for prayer for the next 12.

21DSD – Day 7

I’m in shock that I’m still doing this thing…seriously. If you know me at all you should be shocked too :-). I’ve doubted my ability to do something like this for years. I’ve tried many different ways (mainly all exercises) to loose weight and change my habits and none of them have given me the results that this detox has so far. I’ve lost 6.8 pounds and I feel great! Do I still have the occasional craving for coffee with sugar and cream? Yes. Do I still desire to grab a Dr. Pepper? Yes, but I can honestly I think it would be WAY too sugary for me right now. I’m sitting at Starbucks wrapping up some work and I’m having a recommended Tazo Shaken Iced Passion Tea (Unsweetened) and man it is hitting the spot! Does it mean that I don’t really want a piece of bread? No, of course I do but it has sugar so it is on the “not to eat” list and I’m finally okay with that.

I can not tell you how good I feel. I feel more awake (which is so weird to me since I haven’t had caffeine in SEVEN days), I feel more at peace and I feel like I could do anything. I have (or at least think I have) full energy back and I’m planning on adding exercise back into my daily routine tomorrow with a T25 session.

I’d like to take a minute to talk more about what I’m eating. I know that a lot of you have been asking about that. I’m adding the links below to the website that lists out all of this but this is what a few typical days have looked like for me.

Yesterday:
Breakfast – Eggs (2 eggs scrambled) and Bacon (3 pieces) and water
Lunch – Turkey (Roasted Sliced Lunchmeat, obviously a sugar free brand) and sliced Avocado and water
Snack – Organic Corn Tortilla Chips and Organic Salsa (Mateo’s from Costco, it is SOO good) and water
Dinner – Turkey and Black Beans with avocado on the side and water

Monday:
Breakfast – Eggs (2 eggs scrambled), Bacon (2 pieces) and sliced avocado and water
Lunch – Chik-Fil-A (thanks to Addyson) grilled chicken nuggets (6) and water
Snack – sliced apple and water
Dinner – Shepherd’s Pie (recipe from the 21DSD book with a cauliflower crust that was GOOD) and fresh green beans and water

See….totally doable!! I promise!

21 DSD – Days 3-6

10360703_705054086220252_549675513124297277_nWhat to say…well I’ve been sore, no sore doesn’t cover how I’ve felt. I’ve run a full marathon before and for 3 days straight (days 3-5) I felt as though each night while I was sleeping I ran a marathon. I’ve felt like I’m in a fog and can not seem to think clearly. I’m not sleeping as well (yet) and while I’m not having horrible headaches or cravings I’m also not hungry for as much food at meals. I’ve lost a total (so far) of 4.7 pounds, which is good. I know a lot of that is water weight so I’m not counting my eggs before they hatch. Speaking of eggs…I’m starting to not enjoy them as much, having had them every day for breakfast and sometimes for lunch too.

Day six has been a HUGE improvement into my overall well-being. I’m no longer sore and I actually can say that when I woke up I wasn’t as tired as I usually am when I wake up. I was able to focus a bit more today which made being a mom easier too. Tonight I actually took the kids on a walk around the neighborhood and to the neighborhood park and didn’t feel like I needed to eat something when we got home for energy.

So far, so good.

DSD – Day 1 & 2

 

10484277_713437112048616_8386321197804983176_nWell…yesterday wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I didn’t cheat (which is HUGE) at all but I am exhausted and I did go to bed at 9:45 last night. I started to feel the onset of a horrible headache and as the day drew to an end I could tell my patience was waining.

Yesterday I made Buffalo Chicken Muffins for breakfast and they weren’t bad. Seriously. I was so glad when I bit into it and it wasn’t revolting. It encouraged me. I ate 1/2 of an avocado with my 2 muffins. For lunch, I packed 5 slices of ham and 10 carrot sticks (I took the kids to a splash pad to play with a few little friends and to get out the house) however Owen decided he didn’t want his peanut butter sandwich but instead wanted my ham (so being the wonderfully sacrificial mom that I am) I gave him 4 slices of my ham and I enjoyed 6 carrot sticks (the other 4 were taken by my loving daughter). So when we got home (at 1:50) I had some sunflower seeds and 20 ounces of water. I significantly increased the amount of water I drink on a daily basis months ago but I’m finding myself increasing it a bit more this week, which I think is good for me. For dinner I made Mexi-Meatloaf. It again, surprisingly, wasn’t horrible. I made black beans and avocado to enjoy with our meatloaf. The kids were begging for ice cream but a firm no and a promise to go to the park persuaded them to choose the park over ice cream. I’m not sure I could’ve dished that out then.

I’m writing this in the early hours of day 2 because I’ve left the house to work and have a lunch with friends. I successfully just ate my first meal “out” and did pretty good, if I have to say so. I had the Anaheim Scrambler at Corner Bakery. I ordered the scrambled egg dish withOUT cheese and didn’t give in and eat the toast that came with it. That (if you know me at all) is HUGE. I’m enjoying a cup (or 4) of water instead of my traditional Dr. Pepper. My headache is now a dull pain in the front of my brain and I feel like I’m in a bit of a fog but I’m not sure if that’s due to the lack of caffeine, sugar or a combo of both but that’s what I’m supposed to feel right?!? I keep reminding myself that I’m in “detox” and I can only imagine what it would actually feel like to truly detox from an addictive substance.

21DSD…

Okay, so I haven’t written anything on this blog in over a year…why, you might ask? Well straight up, because I’m BUSY! I have no other clever excuses. I have a very busy husband who works everyday (in some aspect), an almost SECOND GRADER who is pressing the “independent women” envelope everyday and an almost FIVE year old son who is just B-U-S-Y. So why am I writing today??? Well, tomorrow I’m embarking on a fast/detox/eating plan that I think might kill me. Obviously not really or no one would let me do it but if you know me AT ALL you know that this particular fast/detox/diet/eating plan will be a HUGE step for me. I am embarking on a health revolution that I pray will help me kick some old/bad habits that marathon running, Insanity and T25 workouts have yet to make a dent in. The 21 Day Sugar Detox is promoted to “bust the sugar and carb cravings naturally”. I’m coming into my mid-30s, am realizing that I need a major change and unless I commit to do something drastic all of this “middle”weight (old baby weight, at least that’s what I like to tell myself) will never go away. I could train for one marathon-a-year (and stick to my training schedule) but no one around me wants that, too much training, complaining and being away from the house/family. So here I go on this adventure.

So what am I doing right now the night before the detox begins…sitting at Starbucks with a Venti Caramel White Chocolate Mocha…yes…the most sugar filled drink they probably have with coffee :-). Yes, I know that in her book The 21-Day Sugar Detox: Bust Sugar & Carb Cravings Naturally she suggests that you wean yourself from sugar/caffeine in the weeks leading up to the 21-days but again, if you know me I don’t work that way. I posted a “status” on Facebook asking for people’s favorite tea suggestions since I can drink all-natural unsweetened teas and I worded it as this, “Okay friends, I’m wanting to kick my soda habit….favorite tea suggestions, GO!” and man I got some great suggestions but almost 90% of them still included sugar :-(. As I’ve done my research after reading the book last weekend I’ve learned that I in fact, DO eat too much sugar. How, it is in EVERYTHING! Did you know that sugar is even in tortilla chips?! Did you know that sugar is in Refried beans?! Did you know that tea without sugar is NOT good?! Did you know that sugar is in salsa?! Did you know that sugar is EVERYWHERE?!

So as I’ve talked about the 21-Day Sugar Detox I’ve been able to share that I KNOW that this is not a diet but it is a detox program. The goal of any detox program should be to support your body in naturally cleansing itself of substances that create negative health effects—and that’s exactly what The 21-Day Sugar Detox does.

THAT is why I’m doing it. I am hoping to loose a few pounds but I’m really looking to re-boot my body. I have finally found an exercise program that I ENJOY doing daily. (If you don’t like running, walking, or worry about your knees in a spinning class or cross-fit program, try T25. I love it!!) Thanks to my sister I’m toned in areas (booty and back of legs) this summer that I’ve always been self-conscious about. I actually LOVE my legs this summer and I haven’t been able to say that since college.

Also this summer I’ve been doing a study on Happiness and how it is a habit you have to form within you from your heart out, not a “feeling” you have every now and then. This study/devotion has really hit me hard as I have a tendency to be a bit skeptical and negative especially with my husband and kids. I am working on that part of my life and I pray that this only assist in my detox (from the inside out). In fact, today I read, “No matter what you’re going to face this next week, you’re not going to face it alone. God is with you, he is in you, and he is for you.” I think that will be my moto for the next 21 days (well one of many moto’s I’m sure I’ll say over and over to myself).
